Thirty-Two Going On Spinster by Becky Monson
Julia Dorning is a spinster, or at least on the road to becoming one. She has no social life, hates her job, and lives in her parent’s basement with her cat, Charlie.
With the arrival of Jared Moody, the new hire at work, Julia’s mundane life is suddenly turned upside down. Her instant (and totally ridiculous) crush on the new guy causes Julia to finally make some long-overdue changes, in hopes to find a life that includes more than baking and hanging out with Charlie.
But when the biggest and most unexpected change comes, will the new and improved Julia be able to overcome it? Or will she go back to her spinster ways?
When I hear the word 'spinster', I can't help but envision a crotchety old woman yelling at meddlesome children from her front porch with two or three cats milling about her feet. An old woman who knits, gossips and has a bit of bitterness about how her life turned out.
Then there's Julia. She's 32, lives in her parent's basement apartment and has worked at the same job for ten years. She's not old, she has no front porch, she's not yelling at meddlesome children. She does have a cat, Charlie, but he's just one cat. Sure, according to Webster's Dictionary, she could be the definition of a spinster. Or she could just be a woman, comfortable in her rut, and so far unsuccessful at finding her soul mate.
What do I think? I think she never really had a chance to spread her wings and fly, never had the chance to hear positive things about herself, never had the chance to develop a strong self-esteem and a confident self. I think this story was an amazing journey of self-discovery for Julia, whose one and only source of confidence stems from her incredible baking abilities. I'm pretty sure I gained five pounds reading this book from osmosis!
Enter Jared: total hotness, mysterious and too good to be true. Or is he? Jared is the new HR hire whose office is the spacious, rarely used, conference room on the sixth floor, where incidentally Julia likes to take the occasional nap. What kind of HR person needs an entire conference room for an office, rather than a cubicle or office like everyone else? Talk about a great first impression, Julia is in the middle of one of those occasional naps, when she is startled awake by someone rattling the locked door handle. Her sleep-muddled mind decides to hide under the conference room table, thinking she can hide there until they leave, and then a sneeze gets the best of her. Her explanation? I can't give everything away, but I will say that you won't look at a red stapler the same again!
Julia is attracted to Jared immediately and when he starts speaking to her and showing her attention, she can't believe it. She finally takes some advice from Brown (her work friend) and her sister, Anna, and after a couple hilarious (and totally relatable) situations, manages to update not only her wardrobe and her style, but also her life. She starts using makeup, loses the 'spinster' outfits and along the way she finds confidence and receives a much-needed a boost to her self-esteem.
When Julia's life hit the skids, I was devastated for her. I mean, here's this woman who has just turned her life around and she's dealt a blow that could send her back to her spinsterly ways. Really? I won't tell you how it turns out, you really, really need to read the book!
Becky Monson's debut novel is full of interesting characters (well, except for Julia's creepy boss), and they are all well-developed. The story is written entirely from Julia's point of view, which at times frustrated me (I won't lie). I very much wanted more information, especially from Jared. I feel that much hotness deserved more of the spotlight! The story moved along at a great pace and I really loved the premise for the book. There is a sequel in the works, I'm told, and I am eager to read it!
